Layer Cake Log Cabin Quilt Tutorial - Beginner Friendly Free Quilt Pattern!

A Layer Cake is a 42 Piece precut of 10"x10" squares. They make quilts quick and easy to make, not to mention give you a great mix of matching colors and prints that will fit together perfectly. You can check out the layer cakes we have in stock in the Precut/bundle section of my shop.

I loved making this quick, easy, and beginner friendly layer cake log cabin quilt!

The quilt I made in this tutorial was made with the Costeria by AGF Layer Cake and finished at approximately 48"x56" which is a great size for a small throw. My cutting was extremely sloppy so I had trimmed all of my blocks down to 8.5" but you should easily be able to trim to 8.75" with careful cutting or even 9" when using a scant seam allowance. Sizes below are based on a 8.75" *unfinished* block size!

You can watch the entire Youtube tutorial on how to make this quilt top here

I loved using two fabrics from Suzy Quilt's collection "Slow Summer" for the backing I used the Marble in the color Glacier and for the binding I used Tiny Stripes, there's not much more I love on a quilt than striped binding!

Just look at the marble fabric back! I love a good quilt twirl, haha!

Fabric Requirements by quilt size (for all sizes except for baby size I would add 1/2 yard to the backing fabric requirement if you're going to be pattern matching the seam on the back):

Size:

Baby  - 12 blocks (4x4 block layout 34”x34”) - 1 layer cake of 16 10" squares, 1-1/4 yards backing and batting, 1/2 yard binding (4 - 2.5” strips)

Small Throw (size pictured and shown in tutorial)  - 42 blocks (6x7 block layout 51”x59.5”) - 1 whole layer cake or 42 10" squares , 3.5 yards backing and batting, 1/2 yard binding fabric ( 6 - 2.5” strips)

Large Throw Size - (8x8 block layout 68" x 68") - 64 block - 2 layer cakes or 64 10" squares, 4 yards backing and batting, 3/4 yard binding fabric (8-2.5" strips)

Bed - (10x11 block layout, 85”x93.5”) - 3 layer cakes or 110 10" squares,  7-1/4 yards backing and batting, 3/4 yard binding fabric (10 - 2.5” strips)

Here is the cutting chart that I mention in my tutorial!
